Chief Designer Of Sony's Playstation Retires

Foster City, CA (AHN) - Ken Kutaragi, the 56-year-old creator of Sony's PlayStation game console and the PlayStation 3 device, retired Tuesday as chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) and group CEO. The personnel change comes as Sony's leading product faces production and sales headaches.

Kutaragi, who announced his retirement plans in April, will continue as an advisor, a SCE spokesperson told the AP. Kazuo Hirai, SCE's CEO and past president, will now head the gaming division.

Last week, Sony chairman Howard Stringer said the company is "refining" how to lower the PS3's price, according to The Financial Times. The report follows a disappointing fiscal year ending March 31, showing 5.5 million PS3 units sold compared to 5.84 million Wiis.
