Building A Successful Game Business: The People

Common perception is that designing a game is glamorous but running business is robotic, inherently unethical and soul numbing. Common perception is wrong. Successful companies encourage their business side to flourish with the same creativity and passion seen in their games.

This is the first in a series of articles outlining the steps to build a successful game business. These steps provide business guidance for companies either at start-up or in transition. Though aimed at management, they encompass basic business principals that informed developers at all levels need to understand so they can make the best decisions for a company.

Part One: The People The game industry has a higher than normal set of the right people in the wrong places. Creative people start game studios, often just out of college.


Dungeon Runners Interview with NCsoft Audio Director/Composer ...

Tracy W. Bush is an award winning sound designer and composer, and is currently the Audio Director for NCsoft. Prior to joining NCsoft in 2004, he was a composer and sound designer at Blizzard, where he worked on such AAA titles as StarCraft, StarCraft: Brood War, Diablo II, WarCraft III, WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne, and World of WarCraft. Previous to his video game career, he worked in technical support and Information Technology positions in San Francisco, and spent evenings and weekends playing piano for small parties, singing in a cappella groups, and stage acting. M4G caught up with Tracy W. Bush (no relation to current US President George W. Bush) to discuss his eclectic score for the recently released free-to-download and play, MMO Dungeon Runners.

M4G: First of all, please tell us about your musical background and how you got started working in the video game industry?

Ashley Rhett Lindsay, a native of Mill Creek, W. Va., came to Chicago in 2000 after graduating with a degree in public relations from West Virginia University. Since his arrival in the Windy City, he has served as trade-show coordinator for a large trade-show management company; account executive for a public relations agency; and coordinator of student orientation programs at a local college.

He currently serves as the development associate/special events manager for Test Positive Aware Network (TPAN), and has played an integral part in the creation of TPANs newest fundraising event, Chicago Takes Off, which debuted in February 2007. He also coordinates the logistics and fundraising efforts for TPANs Ride for AIDS Chicago and annual gala. In addition to major events at TPAN, he also coordinates and serves on TPANs program events committees, including Man Alive, a gay mens health summit; Women Living, an HIV/AIDS event for women; PULSE at NorthEnd and Positively Aware at Hydrate, two social events hosted by TPAN; and other outreach programs and events.
