Grand jury indicts fugitive Marine in woman's death
Authorities said they believe Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean, 21, fled to his native Mexico after the death of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach. One of Laurean's cousins said he saw the wanted man near Guadalajara, Mexico, a week ago. Investigators said Laurean killed Lauterbach, 20, who was eight months' pregnant, last month, burned her body and buried it beneath a fire pit in his backyard. See a timeline of events » Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson said prosecutors will not seek the death penalty in the case if the suspect is found in Mexico but they are reserving the right to pursue that option if he turns up somewhere else. Read the indictment Mexico will not extradite prisoners if they face a possible death sentence. The grand jury also indicted Laurean on charges of ATM card theft, attempted card theft, fraud and robbery with a dangerous weapon.
What pants rant says about Jeremy Paxman
Sir Stuart, certainly, has not taken Paxman's barbs well and is said to be furious that the email has been leaked. The signs that Paxman has become a fully paid-up 24-carat Victor Meldrew have been there for some time. Simply, we may not have noticed them. However The Garrick Club, one of London's more relaxed gentlemen's clubs, did. Several years ago when the presenter was put up for membership, he was expected to walk in. Astonishingly, he didn't. He was blackballed, with one member objecting strongly to him being elected on the grounds that he "is rather full of himself". Much later, he finally was admitted. The point of Paxman as Newsnight rottweiler is to be incessantly insubordinate, the anti-Establishment journalist garlanded with idealism and righteous anger. But if those were the qualities that he left Cambridge with in the early 1970s, today they appear to be part of a game that disguises his drift - perfectly normal for most middle-aged men - towards membership of grumpy Middle England.
